DFB Cup quarter-finals: Eight teams still dreaming of Berlin

Magazine, 04.04.2023

Two days of cup action await football fans in Germany on Tuesday and Wednesday. And, as always, ERGO is in the thick of things in its role as sponsor.

DFB Pokal Viertelfinale

A particular highlight is the quarter-final between RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund, which sees the last two winners of the DFB Cup face each other. The game will also see Leipzig coach Marco Rose welcome his former club. For many, it will be the match of the round, and only one of these contenders for a place in next season’s Champions League can keep their cup hopes alive (Wed., 05.04.2023, 20:45).

Six top Bundesliga teams still in it

Two other top Bundesliga teams will meet in Munich. However, while football experts expect nothing less from Bayern Munich, “little” SC Freiburg has also established itself in the Champions League places. While the coaching situation in Munich has been turbulent recently and Thomas Tuchel has been in charge for only a few days now, Christian Streich has been head coach at SC Freiburg for 11 years, making him the longest-serving coach in the Bundesliga (Tues., 04.04.2023, 20:45).

Can a Berlin club make it to the final again after so many years? Union Berlin certainly hope so and could take a major step in the right direction at Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday. It won't be easy though. In the Bundesliga fixture, the team from the capital lost 0:2 in Frankfurt on matchday eight. This is another top match-up, and the outcome is anybody’s guess (Tues., 04.04.2023, 18:00).

Can the last remaining second division team make it to the next round?

And last but not least: the duel of the supposed underdogs. 1. FC Nürnberg, the last remaining second division team in the quarter-finals, face VfB Stuttgart, who are knee-deep in a Bundesliga relegation battle. What will come out on top – home advantage or Bundesliga quality? Stuttgart’s sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth is certainly preparing for a real cup battle, saying “Nürnberg have come this far and won’t just hand it to us on a plate” (Wed., 05.04.2023, 18:00).

In the four stadiums, young ERGO ball carriers will once again bring the ball onto the pitch. Kids between the ages of eight and twelve can win a special moment like this by visiting the websites of ERGO sales partners.
