Apart from the German domestic market the ERGO Insurance Group is active in 25 countries. In 2007 the international subsidiaries of the ERGO group contributed a premium volume of € 3.8 bn. The share of international business measured against total premiums of the ERGO Insurance Group was 22%.

In the past years our international operations have become a significant cornerstone within the ERGO group that possess enormous potential for future growth.

For 2008 we expect a double-digit annual growth rate in international operations. ERGO International Operations therefore represents one of the most dynamic business units of the group.

In the business lines health and legal protection ERGO is the European market leader – a strength we want to build on in the future.

Within the Munich Re Group ERGO represents the primary insurance division. Munich Re is a global corporation turning risk into value.

Our vision and strategy

Leveraging the core activities in our German domestic market the ERGO Insurance Group focuses its international operations primarily on private customer business. Our international activities represent an important component in the strategic positioning of the entire Munich Re Group. The Group has identified both an enormous potential for future growth and an opportunity for risk diversification. In our global operations we will continue to focus on markets with profitable growth prospects in which we can successfully leverage our strengths.

In the future the ERGO Insurance Group aims to further expand its international operations. In terms of regional focus we intend to concentrate on emerging markets in Southern and Eastern Europe as well as dynamic growth markets in Asia. At the same time we also seek to continuously develop and strengthen our current operations. Owing to our performance, expertise, reliability and size we want to be first choice for customers and shareholders, employees and internal and external agents not only in the domestic market but also in our international operations.

Therefore, our strategy for international operations comprises three main focal points:

1. Core region Southern and Eastern Europe
In the past we have continuously and systematically strengthened our market positions in the dynamic growth markets of Southern and Eastern Europe. Especially the ERGO subsidiaries in Poland and the Baltics have developed strong positions in their respective markets. Compared to Western European countries the growth markets of Southern and Eastern Europe are characterized by low penetration rates and dynamic economic development in the wake of EU enlargement policies. In addition, due to the demographic projections following more developed Western European markets, we expect a growing demand for private provision.

Entering the Turkish insurance market in 2006 through the acquisition of a majority stake in the Turkish insurer ISVICRE was an important step in the realization of our international aspirations.  Turkey with its 73 million inhabitants and a generally rising demand for insurance products offers a very attractive growth potential and ERGOISVICRE is well positioned in the Turkish market.

2. Core region Asia
Beyond European boundaries we focus on establishing insurance activities especially in Asia with a particular emphasis on India and China. For these insurance markets we predict high growth rates for the next ten to fifteen years which are driven by strong overall economic growth. By establishing new corporations, we intend to benefit from the large and strategically important consumer and insurance markets both in the property and casualty and the life business segments.

3.  Core business line legal expenses
Operating under the brand name of D.A.S. our separate business model legal expenses is present throughout Europe. D.A.S. is the European market leader in legal protection. Founded in 1928 D.A.S. has set up international subsidiaries in fifteen European countries. Starting in the 1950s D.A.S. had begun organizing European networks of legal protection specialists. Therefore, D.A.S. possesses well developed resource pools of lawyers and experts even in countries where it has not yet established official subsidiaries.

We seek to further develop and expand our legal protection business particularly in Eastern Europe and in first steps in Asia by leveraging the established and well known brand name D.A.S. .
